Paul Laurence Dunbar (June 27, 1872 – February 9, 1906) was a germinal African-American poet in the late 19th & early 20th century. Dunbar gained national recognition for his 1896 Lyrics of the Lowly Life. Innate around Dayton, Ohio to parents who got shake slavery, Dunbar died from either tb at 34.

Dunbar's father was the veteran of the American Civil War, having served in the 55th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment and the 5th Massachusetts Colored Cavalry Regiment. He wrote the 12 books of poetry, quaternity books of short stories, & 5 novels & the play. His essays & verse form were published widely in the leading journals of the day. In the period of his life, considerable emphasis was placed on the fact that Dunbar was of pure melanise descent, by using there are no whiten ascendant.
